Sustainability In Stadia

As you are probably already aware, sustainability in sports is a very big deal. But what is sustainability? A simple definition is that sustainability consists of fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social wellbeing.

While many of us can recall the old Wembley stadium, as well as other iconic sports stadia of the past, such as Barcelona’s Camp Nou and Milan’s San Siro. But how well do they hold up against the modern environmental demands placed on new venues being built today? Modern stadia are multi-purpose venues which host a lot more than just sports alone, such as music concerts and conferences. They need to be multi-functional, making their need to be as energy efficient as possible even greater. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has won a handful of sustainability awards since it opened in 2019. In September 2021, Tottenham’s Premier League fixture against London rivals Chelsea was given the tag ‘Game Zero’ with the aim of promoting climate change education and offsetting carbon emissions generated by gameday energy use.

It’s not just football clubs chasing sustainability targets either. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club – more commonly known as ‘Wimbledon’ - is not just green in colour. The famous venue has taken a number of measures to reduce its environmental impact, including ‘mothballing’ areas of the estate to save energy and installing high efficiency LED lights.

Why Attend Smart Buildings Show 2024?

Smarter stadia results in more sustainable stadia. Smart Buildings Show connects visitors to the latest information and technology in the smart buildings industry.

It provides visitors with the information they need to arrive at an informed decision on how to make their buildings more economic for owners and more functional for occupiers.

The Conference

Smart Buildings Show gives visitors free access to the best speakers from across the sector. In 2024 we have four free to attend theatres:

The Energy Management Theatre will look at best practice in the sector and give you the ability to make the right decisions for your energy future. We will be looking at the important role smart buildings will play in helping to hit the UK’s 2050 net zero target, plus we will focus on how we can make buildings sustainable in the 21st century.

The Controls & Network Theatre will look at the physical devices in smart buildings including building controls, energy efficiency, BEMS, sensors, shading and lighting.

The theatre will also look at the importance of networks, connectivity, power and cabling.

The IT & Infrastructure Theatre will highlight the efficient use of existing infrastructure plus how we build the infrastructure of tomorrow. IT and software are the keys to unlocking the benefits of a smart building. Being able to understand and use the data that a building produces is vital to producing a cost effective usable workplace.

The Management & Proptech Theatre will look at how a smart building is managed and operated, including facility management, workplace software, advanced security solutions, sector analysis and market information, system integration, data aggregation and analytics, and services management.

“With their huge commercial exposure, modern sports stadiums around the world are becoming brilliant examples of sustainable building methods. Managing these venues efficiently is a huge task but the technology on display at Smart Buildings Show is aimed at making the job much easier and it’s an incredibly exciting sector to be involved in. We are looking forward to what I hope will be another fantastic show.”
