Heart-of-Midlothian Football Club

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) is one of Europe’s leading providers of façade access and fall arrest equipment services, lightning protection and electrical testing, high-level services, fire and security solutions and water treatment.

With over 20,000 customers, the Group works in a wide range of different industry sectors. In recent times, PTSG has become a trusted name for delivering specialist services for football grounds and stadia. As their engineers are experts in a wide range of specialist access techniques, they are ideally placed to perform a range of at-height services, from specialist high-level decoration and cleaning to the installation, testing and maintenance of lightning protection systems.

Below are short case studies from just three of PTSG’s recent projects at football clubs.

Heart Of Midlothian FC – Tynecastle Park

Working in partnership with Hearts, PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd was contracted to paint the structural roof support trusses in place at the stadium. The out-of-season contract was based on a six-week programme that was concluded within both time scale and budget.

During the close-season, Hearts knew it was necessary to refurbish its playing surface. This presented the opportunity to allow cherry pickers onto the pitch to safely undertake the re-painting of the stadium’s high-level roof trusses with a 25-year life paint specification. At the same time, the club also took the opportunity to replace its existing floodlights, which were at the end of their life expectancy, being nearly 30 years old.

“It is always a pleasure working with the Hearts team, who have a great work ethic and understanding of the importance of maintenance to the stadium,” commented Mark Perfect Junior, Rope Access Contracts Manager for PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd.

Hamilton Academical Football Club – also known as The Accies – compete in the Scottish Championship. Their roots date back to 1874 and, so far, they are the only professional British football club to have originated from a school team. The team also has its fair share of accolades – having won the Scottish Challenge Cup twice and finished runners up in the Scottish Cup on two occasions.

They currently play their games at New Douglas Park. It has been the club’s home since 2001 and has a capacity for more than 6,000 people.

In July 2021, engineers from PTSG Electrical Services Ltd have been asked to test and inspect lightning protection systems at the club’s premises. These systems protect buildings and keep visitors and staff safe during electrical storms.

Lightning protection systems need to be tested and inspected regularly – ideally just less than every twelve months – to check the equipment in different seasonal conditions. Tests and inspections ensure compliance with the Electricity at Work Act 1989, BS 6651 and BS EN 62305.

Hereford FC – Edgar Street

Following the winding up of Hereford United on 19th December 2014, the Hereford United Supporters Trust (HUST) vowed to start a new phoenix club. Three days later, local businessman Jon Hale, who had earlier been chairman of HUST, registered the name Hereford Football Club with the Herefordshire County Football Association, in conjunction with the trust and a group of local businessmen. Nicknamed The Whites or The Bulls, the club’s ground has a capacity of 5,213.

Earlier this year, engineers from PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd carried out an inspection of the four floodlight towers at the stadium. They used the fixed access points to safely access the towers with ropes. Abseiling is widely recognised as the safest and most effective method for accessing tall structures. It allows engineers to easily move vertically as well as horizontally, with minimal time spent assembling and disassembling equipment.
