Manchester City Exploring Options To Increase Their Stadium Capacity To Over 60,000

The entrance to Manchester City's Etihad Stadium The Etihad Stadium currently holds 53,400 but Manchester City are exploring ways of extending the North Stand behind the goal.

City already have planning permission to do the work – having obtained it prior to adding a third tier to the South Stand back in 2015, where they added 6,000 seats and increased the capacity to its current level.

While there is no set time frame in place, club sources say the project is back on the table and they are doing their research on various different configurations, with matching up the two ends behind the goals or combining the tiers as two different options.

Ways of adding more corporate areas to the stadium are also being looked at, and the possibility of an on-site hotel has also been mentioned.

The work is likely to be more expensive than the South Stand revamp seven years ago, at cost of around £75million.

The Co-op Live Arena is a new music venue currently being built next to the stadium in East Manchester, and is due for completion in December 2023. The £365million project is led by the City Football Group and US giant Oak View Group.

City want that 23,500 seat venue finished before they start work on the to avoid another huge construction project on the site at the same time.

Depending on their final plans, it could result in the Etihad become the third biggest club stadium in the country, following Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
