Old Trafford Hosts Historic Opener For Women’s Euros

The sign outside Manchester United stadium Old Trafford hosted a record-breaking crowd for a Women’s European Championship match on Wednesday night as England kicked off Euro 2022 with victory over Austria.

The tournament hosts triumphed 1-0 in front of a competition‑high 68,871 supporters at the Theatre of Dreams, smashing the previous record of 41,301 from the 2013 final in Stockholm.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the match, Alessia Russo commented on the size of the crowd: “Seventy-thousand people at Old Trafford, opener of the Euros, I think it’s what dreams are made of and obviously we got the three points too so even better.”

The last time the Women's Euros was hosted in England, in 2005, the tournament was staged in the northwest of England in its entirety, with an average attendance of 7,894 during the competition. The most recent staging of the Women's Euros in 2017 was in the Netherlands, with the average attendance standing at 7,743. On Wednesday, Old Trafford was virtually a sell-out, with 68,871 fans inside the stadium, a new record crowd for the tournament and a fantastic spectacle for the growing Women’s game in the UK.
