Stadium Security Again In Focus At Wembley

England v Hungary match at Wembley Stadium Fighting broke out in the away section of the stands at Wembley last night as England hosted Hungary, with at least one fan arrested for racially aggravated behaviour against a steward.

Around 800 Hungary fans were inside the stadium for the World Cup qualifying clash, with stewards set upon before the Met Police received an angry backlash from supporters, and eventually retreated back towards the concourse after appearing outnumbered as truncheons were drawn.

It's not clear what caused the trouble, but according to fans inside the stadium, away supporters could be seen goading stewards. Within seconds the police moved in as punches were thrown and fighting broke out in the stands. Eventually, the situation was brought under control as the game continued.

FIFA ordered Hungary to play two home FIFA competition matches behind closed doors, one suspended for two years, following racist behaviour by supporters after Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham were racially abused during the return leg in Hungary last month.

The fanbase was again under scrutiny in London, with the travelling fans booing as England players took the knee before kick-off, but as the ugly scenes were played out on the television to millions, it appeared as though once again a lack of preparation by either the Met Police or the Security team at Wembley could come under fire, despite the disgraceful behaviour of a number of the Hungarian supporters.

For the stewards present it would have been a horrifying and frightening experience and they seemingly did well to retain their composure, but as the Police arrived they looked worryingly outnumbered, in scenes echoing those at the Euro 2020 finals, where sheer numbers of ticketless fans caused chaos as they rampaged past security cordons.
